Social and cultural norms influence how we feel, communicate and operate within a collective. Norms can help a society remain civilized, damage and oppress, or become a strong force toward change. For social beings, finding a balance between developing a healthy sense of self-identity and responding to the normative influences of culture and society remains an ongoing theme. We are quick to accuse teens of wanting to “fit in.” Yet even as adults, no matter how independent we become, we never quite lose the need to “fit in” while retaining our cultural and personal identity.
